This event has ended.

BWAC featured artists for the summer exhibition are Joseph Anastasi and Audrey Frank Anastasi.

Fitting to the title of this summer’s BWAC exhibition, “Art in Changing Perspectives,” Joseph Anastasi debuts his dramatic, grand scale presentation of photographic images, which definitely offers an altered perspective. As one of the “BWAC featured artists,” Mr. Anastasi applies his expertise in providing limited edition archival giclee services to the artist community, to his own imagery.

WIKIPEDIA defines Perspective as, “the way in which objects appear to the eye based on their spatial attributes, or their dimensions and the position of the eye relative to the objects.” Whether defining the picture plane with a field of pixels, a chain link fence or a window pane, Anastasi’s cohesive body of work is decidedly urban with a contemporary perspective and point of view. Based largely on video screen capture from broadcast television, the poetry is created in the selection of the moment. Paraphrasing from a conversation Joseph had with artist John Chamberlain about a Duchamp quote, Joseph, too, proceeds from the premise that, “There is no found object. It is discovered.” In response to universal media bombardment of television and internet images, Mr. Anastasi recognizes the equalizing effect of the same imagery being accessible anywhere in the world. By translating selected fleeting moments into oversize photographs printed on canvas, the resulting “persistence of vision” is a natural extension of his ongoing interest in creating the perception of movement from static objects seen in many of his photographic/sculptural installations.

Audrey Frank Anastasi is known for her bold use of materials, masterful brushwork, and broad range of style and subject. As a BWAC featured artist, Audrey has the opportunity to show a variety of pieces from parallel bodies of work. Prolific throughout her career, Audrey is presenting selections of hand embellished monotypes of birds and her signature birch series, as well as works on canvas. She will also exhibit grid installations of experimental works on paper based upon female subjects, and incorporating found objects, mixed media, and stream of consciousness text.

The Anastasis, who are also owner/directors of Brooklyn's well-respected Tabla Rasa Gallery, are both thrilled with the opportunity to present their artwork in the BWAC exhibition space as “selected artists.“ They respect the unique service BWAC provides the visual arts community in Brooklyn. “The partnership, merging the democratic philosophy of BWAC with the generosity of Greg O’Connell’s space donation, plays an important role as an incubator of new art, as well as a showcase for practicing professional artists,” says Audrey. “Unlike the wall space allotted in inches, in the majority of venues for the artist to self-select for display, at BWAC, every artist has free reign of 64 square feet, creating an opportunity for the individual to impact the viewer with a boldly personal visual statement.”

The selection of the two Anastasis represents opposite poles of artistic vision and approach. "I work in a frenzy, doing everything I can to plow ahead on intuition," says Audrey Anastasi. "Joseph, on the other hand, is cerebral, broadly conscious, and methodical. Where our aesthetics merge is that we both have an aversion to art that feels trendy or depends upon verbal hype. Although we have completely different manners of working, ultimately, we both believe in creating art that feels genuine. After all, art is almost always a work of fiction, but the best fiction rings true."
