Martos Gallery announces the second solo show of Servane Mary, featuring new works by the Swiss-French artist.

Apart from her interest in the purely aesthetic aspect of color, Mary is greatly fascinated with the human figure - be it as an icon of sport, film or music or as the embodiment for various social strata.
Using photos from newspapers, magazines and tabloids Mary is exploring the distortion of reality and the ambiguity between truth and fiction that is generated by the omnipresence of modern media. Convinced that the reproduction of iconic images by the thousands often causes their original meaning to be obliterated, the artist uses painting as a way to sustain the tradition of figuration. At the same time her works are exploring human emotions and the respective story of the figure portrayed, thus actively forming a stock-taking of the emotive power of images.
Marshes II, the largest work in the show consisting of 36 portraits of women with different social, religious and cultural backgrounds, is Mary's endeavor to combine individual histories in order to fully explore the fragile link connecting all of them – a link whose central themes are life, death and beauty.
