This event has ended.

Moon and Stars Project presents the 10th New York Turkish Film Festival, a breathtaking selection of contemporary films coming out of Turkey. Opening Friday, October 3 at Anthology Film Archives and continuing through Saturday, October 11, this year’s line-up includes award winners from international film festivals, including the Cannes Film Festival.

As evidenced by the attention garnered by directors such as Nuri Bilge Ceylan and Fatih Akin in international film festivals, Turkish film has come far in recent years. Many of the films in this year’s line-up have won awards on the international film circuit, but many of them are unknown in the U.S. Moon and Stars Project is excited to present these talented filmmakers to a New York audience.
Thanks to a thriving economy, greater access to European Union funding, and grant support for prospective filmmakers, the Turkish film industry has grown at an impressive pace in recent years. Increased use of digital film technology combined with the ability to make a film in Turkey on a modest budget has created a flourishing of film talent exploring a wide range of subject matter. The Turkish Film Festival’s line-up of films this year covers topics on the Istanbul underworld and conflicts between rich and poor, urban and rural, and young and old. There are 24 films, both poetic and enigmatic in their range. Some are by seasoned directors and some are debut films, which have already gained attention on the international film circuit.
Robert Haller, Director of Collections at Anthology Film Archives, has had a longstanding interest in Turkey and its culture. In 2000, Turkish Film Festival director, Mevlüt Akkaya, collaborated with Mr. Haller and John Mhiripiri, Director of Administration and Exhibitions, to produce a film retrospective of the work of Omer Kavur, the first ever in the US for a Turkish director. This was followed by a retrospective of Zeki Demirkubuz in 2003, whose work has won many awards at international film festivals, but had been rarely seen in the US. With the support and success of these previous collaborations on Turkish film, Moon and Stars Project is honored to be presenting this exciting line-up of filmmakers at Anthology Film Archives.
