Lifted from the annals of MTV history, “Jack *%ss” takes its title from the eponymous American Television program featuring the stunts and pranks of a cast led by pop impresario Johnny Knoxville. Knoxville came to the public’s attention in 1999 when he agreed to test various self defense devices by being tasered, maced and eventually shot while wearing a bulletproof vest. Almost three decades earlier, the artist Chris Burden choreographed a performance in which he had an assistant fire a single shot to his left arm. Knoxville’s act was a stunt, Burden’s “Shoot” sited as it was within the time frame of the Vietman War, understood as political/social gesture, contextualized as Art performance, was so much more. Both shots made a sound, Chris Burden’s was heard round the world.
