In his second exhibition in RARE PLUS, entitled Mötley Crüez, Jeff Lutonsky presents a group of new magic marker drawings on paper. Unlike his earlier narrative genre scenes, these works eschew some of the heavier topics of rural life in order to chronicle the playful activities and rowdy exploits of a group of young people on lake vacation aboard a houseboat somewhere in Kentucky. Working from digital images, Lutonsky photo-realistically renders his subjects against abstracted (and occasionally non-existent) grounds. Collaged and omitted elements, as well as mimicked photographic exposure techniques, as seen in She’s Actin’ Single, I’m Drinkin’ Double (2008), underscore the dissociative, euphoric atmosphere that certain types of thirty-somethings indulge in when they vacation.
