Media: Video installation

Jennifer Steinkamp will present a new series of work, entitled Daisy Bell. Here the Los Angeles-based artist makes reference to technology and her choice of medium in one of her most significant installations to date.

Daisy Bell makes reference to a certain moment in the history of science when in 1962, Bell Labs used the IBM 704 to synthesize the popular 19th Century English song of the same name. The song was also used in the climactic scene of the epic 2001: A Space Odyssey when the HAL 9000 begins to sing it as his consciousness is degraded. Daisy Bell is comprised of varieties of poisonous flowers that appear to cascade down the gallery walls.
