‘There is no need to invent new forms. The square and cube are efficient and symmetrical.’- Sol Lewitt ‘The Cube’
The cube is a fundamental and iconic form; it is composed solely of right angles - the epitome of simplicity and abstraction. Plato believed the cube was one of the five basic geometric shapes that composed the universe. It is a standard in urban landscape from the white cube of the gallery to the grids of city blocks - it is a shape that defines our surrounding. Its presence in history through modern times stands as a challenge for artists to confront its formal integrity and make it their own. This exhibit takes a look at the different interpretations and perspectives of the cube.
