Mario Naves "Postcards from Florida"
Elizabeth Harris Gallery
This event has ended.
Elizabeth Harris Gallery presents an exhibition of collages by Mario Naves. Naves' recent series of collages, collectively titled Postcards from Florida, were made during a two year stint as a visiting instructor at the Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota. Inspired by the saturated colors of Florida sunsets and the encompassing space of the Gulf of Mexico, Naves found small formats best suited to intimate and almost diaristic pictures.
Artist and New York Sun critic Maureen Mullarkey wrote that "overall sensuousness, color harmonies and alchemy of composition are gracious constants in Naves' art." Writing in the New York Times, critic Benjamin Genocchio referred to the collages as "delicate and gorgeous." Times critic Ken Johnson wrote that Naves, as a critic who makes art, "clearly know[s] something about the production side" of art making.
Mario Naves lives and works in New York City, He teaches at Brooklyn College and Pratt Institute. He is the art critic for the New York Observer.
