This event has ended.

Meredeth Turshen’s pastel paintings start from life drawings and continue the search for the lyrical line in increasingly abstract compositions that are layered over pen and ink sketches. The paintings incorporate reverse drawing (also called transfer drawing), a technique often used by Paul Klee. After developing the color composition, Turshen returns to the model and uses the transfer work to find a soft, rich and varied line. This work reflects her interest in body movement and dance theater, particularly the performance of Alwin Nikolais. For Turshen, who is also an author, drawing transmits the individuality and energy of handwriting and offers both freedom and immediacy. Soft pastels inspire endless possibilities of color play and the expression of a wide range of moods. The titles of the paintings are drawn from lines of women’s poetry.
