A survey of work by nineteen mid-career artists working in traditional media, "Counterbalance" explores the myriad ways in which different artists responds to the issues surrounding the depiction of reality. The featured works juxtapose the abstract and the real, the organic and the synthetic.
"Counterbalance" is the result of a dialogue about how an artist fits into a larger cultural and artistic context. More importantly, however, the exhibition illustrates the multifarious human responses to everyday life and the way that we, as humans, continuously interact with our own expectations and illusions. Each of the artists represented in "Counterbalance" reacts differently to reality, and that reaction is wholly his or her own-regardless of the way in which it is synthesized.
