Onishi Gallery introduces the ‘KAGA interior – Yamanaka lacquer’ project as a part of Japan Brand, a government initiative being supported by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, and the Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industries. Japan Brand was founded in 2004 to promote innovative products created using traditional skills by small to medium-sized local enterprises.

Urushi – natural lacquer has been used in the daily life of the Japanese for more than nine thousand years. The material’s unique characteristics make it ideal for many applications. It is completely organic and safe, yet produces a finish that is waterproof with low heat conductivity, while offering an amazing resistance to many chemicals, acids and insects.

Using this remarkable material, the Yamanaka Japan Lacquer Panel, a product connecting art, architecture and interior design, has been developed.

Blessed with a wealth of trees and innovative craftspeople, Yamanaka long ago achieved fame as a land of urushi-ware and over the last 450 grew to become the biggest production area in Japan. This project will introduce the sophisticated art of Yamanaka’s urushi and maki-e through various events.
