This event has ended.

Onishi Gallery presents six young Japanese calligraphers in a group show, New Plus Old. The show will feature 16 pieces by the young calligraphers, all of whom are in their twenties. At the August 8th opening, inspired by the summer season, a calligraphy-music band will perform at 7 pm in the gallery. A joint collaboration by artists Yurika Nagamine, Eriko Miura and Saya Tanaka, Fudekko Club (“Brush Girls Club”) has performed its calligraphy demonstrations at clubs in Tokyo and is proud to premier in New York at Onishi Gallery.

Through classical calligraphy paired with hip hand-lettering onto unique surfaces rather than paper, these artists reflect the show’s theme with a distinctly 21st century freshness and sense of purpose. By holding calligraphy exhibitions in New York City, the artists are working to establish calligraphy’s place as an international art form.

All graduates of the Department of Calligraphy of Daito Bunka University, the artists featured in New Plus Old are committed to career paths in calligraphy, an ancient yet modern art.

Several of the participating artists also teach calligraphy at Japanese high schools. By exploring calligraphy as a daily ritual, this extraordinary group of female artists seeks to re-examine their gender and identity as contemporary calligraphers and to excavate the meaning of calligraphy in modern society.
