Howard Scott Gallery is presents Resolute, an exhibition by the Washington D.C. based artist, Robin Rose. Rose has shown with Howard Scott Gallery since 1985 and has been painting in the encaustic medium since 1978. Rose says, "I find the rich experience of painting keeps getting deeper and deeper. Just when I believe I have reached a terminus, I find a new and perfect moment in which to reengage." The work has been called masterly and mystical. The transcendental quality of Roses' work resides in their enigmatic shifting of light and in the references to nature embedded in multiple layers of pigmented wax. Resolute is a collection of new paintings drawing you deeper into the experience of seeing. They offer the astute observer the opportunity to recognize the cellular, the mineral, and the terrestrial forms of our world trapped in an other-worldly microcosm of wax. They offer to stop time and like insects caught in amber, offer a longer vision of time, place, and personal history.

The paintings are encaustic on linen on honeycomb aluminum panels. People who are familiar with his work recognize a peculiar aspect not readily seen in a momentary scan. These paintings glow from inside. It is difficult to determine the thickness of weight of the actual encaustic surface. Sometimes the surface is thin as porcelain and translucent as jade. Sometimes the surface is dense and heavily charged with raw pigment. Close observation of the work reveals that each painting is created in an entirely different technique. Rose describes his method of working as a 'trance state' where he invents and explores the nature of each painting.
