This event has ended.

LMAKprojects presents Nicoletta Agostini first solo-exhibition in New York entitled Portraits, a series of over 700 drawings.

With this exhibit, Agostini reflects on the human psyche through observation of the world around her. Her drawings tell the story of the protagonists through vigorous studies of their body language she is able to expose their hidden fears, frailty and their strength, without language or dialogue. Though some may see these emotions as a weakness, for Agostini they are strengths. Her portraits are intimate views of people’s movements, and as she gains their confidence the subject subconsciously reveal their true self. As a result, she brings us people’s perspectives of the world in a poetic manner, while highlighting the complexities of their feelings.

Always portrayed alone, her characters are often struggling with their communication with another person, who is never present but always suggested, emphasizing on the recurrent themes of solitude and melancholy. The subjects are often seated in a chair, which is Agostini’s metaphor for conversation. Through her use of everyday situations, the viewer can easily recognize themselves in the subject’s actions and especially reactions.

One of Agostini’s portraits’ particularities is that faces are never visible. Her goal is to synthesize her characters. Another trait of Agostini’s is her use of minimal and delicate lines, which give the impression that something is unfinished. However it is Agostini’s way to include the viewer, allowing us to complete the story, by adding our own experience to the drawing.

This ambitious body of work took 3 years to be completed, involving over 200 people close to her, from her childhood to the present. Agostini’s portraits will be exhibited next to one another, covering the gallery walls as if it were wallpaper
