Virginia Overton "Moving on South"
WHITE BOX
This event has ended.
With the upcoming election just months away, people all over the nation have a new found interest in their fellow Americans. News shows carry us into town hall meetings in places most will be hard pressed to find on a map. In Moving on South, Virginia Overton reflects on her Tennesee upbringing, importing visions of the national landscape to the NYC bubble. The installation will explore the vast expanses of the gallery, illuminating the dissonance that exists between the local, rural sensibility and aesthetic, contrasted with the sleek international streets of Chelsea.
Virginia Overton was born in 1971 in Nashville, Tennessee. Over the past several years, she has been living and working between Memphis and New York City. She received her and M.F.A. from the University of Memphis in 2005. The summer of 2006, Overton curated and exhibited work in VA4398UV, a mobile group exhibition with Fia Backstrom, Elisa Lendvay, Marlo Pascual and Meredyth Sparks. Last summer she participated in the “String Arty Show” at Greene Naftali Gallery in New York organized by Josh Smith. And most recently had a solo show at Powerhouse curated by Peter Fleissig.
