"Born to Film: The Cinema of Danny Lyon" Film Program

Anthology Film Archives

This event has ended.

Filmmaker in-person on Thursday, June 26!

One of the finest and most enterprising of American photographers, and the author of such iconic photo-books as THE BIKERIDERS, THE DESTRUCTION OF LOWER MANHATTAN (both recently reprinted in beautiful new editions), and CONVERSATIONS WITH THE DEAD, Danny Lyon has long devoted himself to chronicling some of the most marginalized and little-understood of American sub-cultures, from bikers in the midwest and prison inmates in Texas, to Native-American communities throughout the U.S. Throughout his career he has worked across different media, exhibiting photos, publishing books in which text and photography are inextricably linked, and, with little fanfare, producing a large body of film work. While a recent show at the Whitney provided a glimpse of two of his films, most have not been screened for many years. Anthology is pleased to present this comprehensive retrospective devoted to Danny Lyon, the filmmaker.
Concurrently with Anthology’s retrospective, the Edwynn Houk Gallery, at 745 Fifth Avenue, will present an exhibition of Lyon’s photographs, from June 20- July 20.
