This event has ended.

Taking the human figure as a starting point, Berube’s work further investigates the dichotomy between familial relationships and the self. A mother of three working from current events, history, and personal memory, the artist explores the mixture of emotions that arise in family life. Themes of self-identity, sickness, death, love, and despair are re-occurring throughout her work. Several of her paintings further explicate the relationship of a mother and her children reflecting on the child’s innocence and ignorance of the alienation of the mother’s self.

Berube’s work includes paintings, drawings, prints and hand-made books that use formal and conceptual devices while historically examining technique. In the eerie painting “Ancient Greek Doll,” the artist uses the ancient imagery of a fertility doll as a way of examining themes of procreation and motherhood.

Patricia Berube lives and works in Cohasset, MA. This will be her fourth solo show in New York.
