Gloria Garfinkel "Color K Series"

Paul Sharpe Contemporary Art / Paul Sharpe Projects

This event has ended.

Three large canvases by abstract artist Gloria Garfinkel dominate this exhibition. Green, orange, and blue are the dominant fields of color complemented by areas of purple, red, and yellow. The surface of the paintings is delicately painted over - sometimes a scribble, other times a geometric motif.

The Color K paintings, completed in 1993, are oil on linen on shaped stretchers that consist of central fields of color bordered by colored areas or empty space. The intricately shaped and painted canvases initially appear to be solid fields of color, but each area is worked with a geometric motif. The paintings were inspired by the juxtaposition of transcendental gardens with modern buildings and busy streets found in everyday Kyoto, Japan. Placed one against the other, a moss garden rests while a Pachinko Parlor clatters.
