This event has ended.

Washington Square Windows announces an exhibition of the work of Boyang Hou. The installation is mounted in three windows facing Washington Square Park and is lighted 24 hours a day.

Cloaked in combat gear, a young people's brigade brandishes pointed weapon and word. Snow swirls, smoke drifts, and flame-throwers eerily light the skies of Hou's boldly painted homeland. Like a child's action figure, each cultural warrior comes fully equipped with modified military accessory. Collectively, the soldiers assume a protective posture as they advance--simultaneously challenging and confounding the viewer with mixed messages.

Hou couples propagandistic imagery with calligraphic text, taking a playful shot at the widespread use of consumer icons in advertising campaigns. "I want my work to raise ten questions with every answer. It should puzzle and irritate you enough to bring up issues of materialism, war, and government propaganda, yet, conversely, it should tickle you and make you chuckle at how ridiculous this whole thing is. My 'new line' of designer military apparel invites viewers to step onto the battlefield and decide for themselves."
