"Walter Martin and Paloma Muñoz" Artist Talk and Book Signing

Aperture Gallery

This event has ended.

Coinciding with the highly anticipated release of Travelers (Aperture, October 2008) the artists' first monograph featuring two major series, Travelers and Islands, Walter Martin and Paloma Muñoz will discuss their collaborative process and the spirit of their fascinating work. Within the simple constraints of a glass globe, Martin and Muñoz collaboratively create mesmerizing miniature snowbound environments, then record them in chilly color photographs. Meticulously manipulated to convey their sleek, unique aesthetic, these captivating images conjure up entire sequences of imaginary worlds and events.

At first glance the work is playful; on closer observation, it often reveals darker narratives: lone wanderers survey the frigid landscape, people and creatures exhibit unnatural tendencies, and ill-defined crimes are committed. The world of Martin and Muñoz is comprised of funny nightmares and disturbing fantasies that are rosy and dark at the same time. In the second series, Islands, the work transitions from the dark side of the snow globe to larger tableaux, but the images are still rife with anxiety and dark humor.
