This event has ended.

The Paula Cooper Gallery presents an exhibition of new paintings by John Tremblay. The exhibition will be on view from March 29 through April 24, 2008, at 521 West 21st Street.
In this exhibition, Tremblay extends his longstanding interest in the canvas’ shape, departing in most works from the traditional rectangular configuration. The new works include jagged polygons with irregularly shaped holes in their center, monochrome planes with slot-shaped openings, and constructions of intersecting or juxtaposed canvases. Each work is rendered object-like, even sculptural, bringing the notion of negative space in the realm of painting while remaining attentive to issues of color and line.
John Tremblay first exhibited in New York in 1990, and has since then shown extensively in Europe, Japan, Korea and the United States. Most recently, his work was included in The Freak Show, Musée d’Art Contemporain de Lyon, France (2007); L’Oeil Moteur: Art Optique et Cinétique, 1950-1975, Musée d’Art Moderne et Contemporain de Strasbourg, France (2005); and The Painted World, P.S.1 Center for Contemporary Art, Long Island City, New York (2005). A monograph was published by Editions Sujet/Objet (Paris) in 2005. Tremblay’s work is in the collections of the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, NY; the Fonds National d’Art Contemporain, France; the Fogg Art Museum, Cambridge, Mass.; and the Cabinet des Estampes, Geneva, among others. He lives and works in New York.
