Treating landscape as stage sets, Belcourt, Brenneman and Yim use anthropomorphic shapes, spatial arrangement and high-keyed color to evoke a range of phenomena and emotion.

The bulbous, cushion-like shapes in Louise Belcourt’s paintings and gouaches are animated, monumental, and deceptively reductive. Floating or resting in a light filled space, these shapes gently shimmy and slide against one another. Layers of carefully brushed pigment impart an organic quality to the forms, suggesting their own mysterious life source.

In the collaged watercolors and gouaches of Sarah Brenneman, landscapes are scaled down to capture the essence of a single subject. Organic shapes like trees and plants blend into abstract motifs, reflecting the artist’s search for nature among the imposing grid of the urban environment. Fractured and layered, these paintings demonstrate spontaneity with humorous and unexpected results.

Mie Yim’s fantastical paintings of mutated characters shape and dominate their own strange terrain. Images teeter between the vacant faces of plush children’s toys and expansive, cavernous landscapes. The large scale of Arrival and Lonesome Rock elevate these characters to an almost heroic stature.

Louise Belcourt has had numerous solo exhibitions in New York (two with the gallery), Paris and San Francisco, and has been featured in many group exhibitions, including ones at the Brooklyn Museum, the Fleming Museum, Greenberg Van Doren Gallery, Daniel Weinberg Gallery and Geoffrey Young Gallery. She lives and works in New York and Canada.

She received a BFA from Columbus College of Art and Design and an MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University. She attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture and was an artist in residence at Chashama and The Millay Colony for the Arts. She lives and works in New York.

Mie Yim has had solo exhibitions at Galleria in Arco, Turin and Lehman Maupin Gallery. Her work has been featured in numerous group exhibitions, including ones at ATM Gallery, Ise Cultural Foundation, the Drawing Center and the Weatherspoon Art Museum. She lives and works in New York.
