Felipe Galindo "MANHATITLAN"
Grady Alexis Gallery
This event has ended.
The drawings are Galindo’s twisted take on the legends and images
of Mexico within the New York City landscape. “Manhatitlan” is a
name Galindo coined that merges Manhattan -the Algonquin name for the island- with the Aztec name of Mexico City, Tenochtitlan. One of the exhibited works, titled The Discovery of Manhatitlan, features a group of pre-Columbian Aztecs arriving at the shore of skyscraper-filled Manhattan. Another piece, Eagle Summit, features a meeting of an eagle warrior from Aztec mythology with one of the eagle ornaments that crown the Chrysler Building. The short animation that accompanies the exhibit is inspired by Aztec mythology and pre-Columbian codexes, and narrates an imaginary migration of Mexicans to New York. Images from the animation will be exhibited in a Codex-like format.
