Robert Frank "Mapping a Journey"

Anthology Film Archives

This event has ended.

Few works of art have won their creators such immediate and lasting renown as Robert Frank’s seminal photography book, THE AMERICANS, a work whose reputation and influence have not waned after 50 years. And even fewer artists have responded to such seismic success by shifting their attention to an entirely different medium. But the Swiss-born Frank, his interests developing in directions ill-suited to still-photography, did just that, embarking on a career which has been dominated by his work in film and video, even while the long shadow of THE AMERICANS has continued to define him in many people’s eyes. Even those who are familiar with his first, and still most famous, film, PULL MY DAISY, are largely unaware of the 20-plus films and videos that followed – experimental dramas, personal essay films, a (relatively) mainstream feature, a rock documentary, music videos, and many more that defy categorization. There may be no other artist whose work is at once so celebrated and yet so infrequently presented in all its breadth and depth. This comprehensive retrospective represents a unique opportunity to survey the full scope of Frank’s remarkable creativity.
“The films I have made are the map of my journey through all this…living. It starts out as scrapbook footage. There is no script, there is plenty of intuition. It gets confusing to piece together these moments of rehearsed banalities, embarrassed documentation, fear of telling the truth, and somewhere the fearful truth seems to endure. I want you to see the shadow of life and death flickering on that screen.” –R.F.
Anthology’s Robert Frank retrospective is presented in collaboration with the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and Steidl, initiators of the Robert Frank Project, an ambitious long-term publishing program encompassing Frank’s complete oeuvre – reprints of his classic and lesser-known books, the publication of previously unseen projects and newly conceived book-works, and his Complete Film Works in specially-designed collector’s DVD sets.
