"On the Wall" Exhibition

Chappell Gallery

This event has ended.

Lest we think that the wall is the private domain of artists who paint, we must remember the grand tradition of stained glass: brilliantly colored windows that have penetrated the walls of cathedrals for many centuries. Nor can we forget the glimmering mosaics that have traveled across cultures for an even longer period. The wall has become an increasingly frequent orientation in the work of many contemporary artists who work in glass, whether they carve, fuse, or sculpt in hot glass. “On the Wall is an exhibit of a select number of these artists who have made the wall a canvas for their visions.

The impact of an elevated wall piece is strong, both from afar and upon close scrutiny. It begins when the viewer confronts the work - from a distance, eye to eye. The magic unfolds as one comes closer to better savor the details – the complex weaving of tiny murrini in Rhoads’ work, the deep carving in Bernstein’s pieces, or the textural intricacies of Yonehara’s hot glass masterworks. For Zhitneva, the wall offers a means to achieve a double image: by setting the piece slightly away from the wall, the light projected on its translucent surface creates a luminous pattern behind it. Light reflection and refraction and exploration of depth are revealed in the monochromatic works of Iezumi, Misoda and Semecká as the pieces respond to overhead light projected onto them.
