This event has ended.

This exhibition commemorates the 40th anniversary of New York City's public art program by presenting 40 installations throughout all five boroughs.

Robert Indiana's twelve foot high Cor-ten steel LOVE sculpture was completed in 1970 and travelled first to Boston and then to New York in 1971. The sculpture was installed in Central Park at the location now known as the Doris Freedman Plaza, prior to be shown at the Indianapolis Museum of Art in the artist's home state. Huge crowds turned out in New York to see the sculpture being erected and as seen in the documentation of the event, a great cheer rose as the tilted "O" was lowered into place. This exhibition was organized by City Parks and Recreation soon after the inception of its public art program, which has become a staple of New York City's art culture.
