This event has ended.

Kathryn Markel Fine Arts presents NYC Landscapes, and exhibition of recent oil paintings and monotypes by Lisa Breslow. This will be Breslow's ninth solo exhibition in New York and her first with the gallery.

The new works in Breslow's current exhibition came about as a result of turning her attention toward the landscape where she lives and works, New York City. She began this exploration by paintings scenes of Central Park at night which express a newfound energy and include, for the first time in her work, elements of the manmade. In these paintings the urban geometry of the city holds its own with the natural forms of the park, as architectural masses rise mysteriously out of the atmosphere.

In the most recent paintings, one sees the raw energy of the New York City streets begin to play a more substantial role in relation to the natural elements in the landscapes. Breslow recently moved her studio to the industrial environs of Long Island City, where she finds serenity and beauty in the most spare cityscapes. In these paintings, gritty streets are transformed into intriguing and vibrant spaces of light. Always there is a branch or a tree which softens the hard edge of the city and reaffirms a connection to nature.

Breslow creates works on wood panels using her own photographs as initial reference points. She simplifies and abstracts the compositions focusing on color, light and tonal relationships through the painstaking process of layering paint, sanding and scraping until a rich, luminous surface is achieved. Draftsmanship is evidenced by the appearance of pencil drawing which accentuates structural forms. The resulting painterly landscapes capture a mood specific to a time and place projecting a shimmering urban energy.
