Kathryn Markel Fine Arts presents California, the first New York solo exhibition of paintings on aluminum by artist Tyrell Collins. Since the early 90's, Tyrell Collins has worked tirelessly in her Oakland studio creating sublime abstract paintings that explore light in all its forms: natural light, light drifting through paint, light reflecting off paint. With transparent oil colors mixed with mica in a laborious process of layering, Collins created luminous worlds filled with these activated reflective spaces.

Recently, however, Collins discovered aluminum panels as a support, and the reflective qualities of the pristine metal surfaces have led her to return to her realistic roots. For California, Collins has departed from her painterly washes on large canvas for a much more precise small-brush technique as abstraction evolved into the imagined landscape. These new paintings reflect a careful study of 17th century Dutch landscape etching, and Tyrell's obsessive precise mark-making combined with the reflective silver of the panels creates luminous, elusive space. The etching-like quality of the golden paint surface is emphasized with ambiguous cropping and carefully composed expanses of exposed metal. Titles come from actual exit names whizzed by on highways. All of these factors combine to make haunting landscapes that flicker in and out of reality. The evoke brief, possible encounters with unknown and unknowable spaces and reflect the subjectivity of our experience of the external environment.

Tyrell Collins graduated from the University of Houston and attended the San Francisco Art Institute advanced painting workshop. She has exhibited extensively in the San Francisco area.
