This group exhibition explores the urban condition. Whether through consideration of material, direct observation, or the transformation of color, shape and form, these artists examine the relationship between the natural and the manmade within the city. William Carroll's acrylic paintings on paper are sensitive gradations of grays describing silhouetted buildings seen during his walks through New York. Depicting construction scaffolding in lower Manhattan, Rackstraw Downes employs careful observation and meticulous detail through working onsite. Lachlan Goudie uses copper and aluminum panels as an underpainting of color and tone for London nightscapes. Using ribbon banners and flags commonly found in used auto lots and grand openings for independent stores and franchises, Daina Higgins investigates a pathos of a less acknowledged suburban Brooklyn. David Kapp's street scenes from high or skewed vantage points evoke the dizzying motion of human and automobile traffic. Using a range of metallic pigments and grounds, Greg Lindquist documents sites of building and decay of the Ikea construction site on the Redhook waterfront and boat graveyards on Staten Island. Depicting fire escapes tangled in flora, Doug Martin's paintings locate the intersection of the natural and the manmade in how city dwellers use plants to transform spaces. Ron Milewicz' extreme horizontal scenes of Long Island City, although painted on-site, are colored with transformative hues, which are often acerbic and suggest temperature and times of day.
