Nagakura Kenichi "Recent Bamboo Sculpture"
Susan Sheehan Gallery
This event has ended.
Nagakura Kenichi, in his artist statements, says he likes to combine parts of the bamboo plant that grew above ground with parts that grew underground. For him such juxtapositions are a reminder of life's dark side. In his sculptural forms, a bamboo root can suggest a branch supporting a nest made by an unidentified species of bird or insect. Although his art evokes nature, it always remains abstract and calligraphic. Nagakura's art embraces opposites such as static and motion or light and shadow. He does not approach these concepts as dualities; instead, he says, he uses them as building materials in his attempts to unite spirit and form.
