In RARE PLUS, Federico Pietrella presents an exhibition entitled Day-Specific that combines a selection of new works on paper with an installation of flashlights laid in a row on the floor to create a meditation on the inexorable passage of time. Employing a unique application of old fashioned date-stamps, like those used by office clerks, Pietrella builds up reproductions of photographic sources with successive layers of dates. The overlapping stamp marks, which create light and shadow, represent a particular working day as well as a permanent testament to a specific moment in time. The passage of time finds another conceptual layer in the subjects the artist chooses, whether it be an autumn landscape or a pregnant woman as in 6/7/8 Oktober 2008 (2008).
The permanence of the works on paper is countered by the ephemeral nature of his flashlight installation. Dozens of flashlights in an array of sizes, shapes, and colors are arranged in a row to project overlapping spheres of light onto the base of the gallery walls. A performative aspect emerges as the batteries die and the lights randomly dim and extinguish. The lifespan of the batteries determines the duration of the event and gives the piece its name, in this instance November 15, 2008 (2008).
