Susan Meiselas and Alfredo Jaar Conversation and Book Signing

Aperture Gallery

This event has ended.

Coinciding with the long awaited reissue of Nicaragua, and the accompanying exhibition on view at the International Center of Photography, Aperture presents a special evening of conversation between internationally acclaimed photojournalist Susan Meiselas and artist and filmmaker Alfredo Jaar.

A Magnum photographer since 1976, Susan Meiselas is renowned for her coverage of the insurrection in Nicaragua in 1978; a seminal body which was first published in 1981. Nicaragua forms an extraordinary narrative of a nation in turmoil. Starting with a powerful and chilling evocation of the Somoza regime during its decline in the late 1970s, Meiselas's images trace the evolution of the popular resistance that led to the insurrection, culminating with the triumph of the Sandinista revolution in 1979. On the occasion of the thirtieth anniversary of the popular insurrection, Aperture is pleased to reissue this contemporary classic, Nicaragua: June 1978–July 1979 (Aperture, September 2008), which is co-published with the International Center of Photography to coincide with the opening of Susan Meiselas: In History, the first U.S. overview of Meiselas's work, which is structured around three key projects, including Nicaragua.

Chilean-born artist, architect and filmmaker Alfredo Jaar left his native country at the height of Pinochet's military dictatorship in 1981. His installations, photographs, films, and community-based projects bear powerful witness to military conflicts, imbalances of power, and political corruption. Jaar has exhibited his work in solo exhibitions worldwide at the New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York; Whitechapel, London; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; Moderna Museet, Stockholm; Museum of Contemporary Art, Rome; Fundación Téléfonica, Santiago and Musée des Beaux-Arts, Lausanne. He has created more than fifty public interventions around the world and published more than thirty monographs of his work.
