John Anderson Exhibition

Allan Stone Projects

This event has ended.

The exhibition will feature seven wood, wire and steel sculptures, some massive and tepee-like,others more elegant and flowing. The sculptures evoke “water-falls of wood,” with cascading tree limbs held together by steel and wire, creating illusions of lightness and fluidity in contrast to the heaviness of the materials. John Anderson marks the artist’s first solo show in six years.

Like playful and brutal giant necklaces, Anderson’s works have an intimidating command of space. This contrasts with their up-close seductive presence with the beautifully carved surfaces. Like Isamu Noguchi’s organic sculptures, each segment of Anderson’s work is a minimal, meticulously and beautifully articulated form. The sculptures resemble Cubist paintings in the way they reveal volume and mass through fractured and rearranged forms. The strung forms suggest bones or vertebrae, the ancient bleached remains of another civilization more attuned with nature.

Anderson,an ex-logger,randomly cuts tree limbs and strips their bark, often leaving protruding stumps of small branches. He then bores a lengthwise hole, coats the segment with clear acrylic, and then strings each segment on a cable, which is wired to a steel plate hanging by chains from the ceiling.
