This event has ended.

School of Visual Arts (SVA) presents “Presence,” a photography exhibition by SVA students and recent alumni examining transitions from youth to adulthood and nomadic life in the Sahara desert. The exhibition is curated by Richard Brooks, assistant director of student galleries.

For his portrait project Youth Protection, Ben Handzo traveled the country photographing members of the Boy Scouts of America. His work examines how this American institution approaches the initiation of boys into manhood. Handzo is a recent alumnus from the MFA Photography, Video and Related Media Department.

Stone Kim’s photographs of trees record the shifts from season to season and serve as
symbols for stages of life. Shooting tree limbs at night using a flash, his images evoke Asian landscape paintings. Kim is a current student in the MFA Photography, Video and Related Media Department.

Alison Malone’s photographs document a group known as the Daughters of Job, a secret society of teenage girls who are the descendants of Freemasons. Her pictures explore identity formation through traditional rituals and female role-playing within a patriarchal organization. Malone is a recent alumnus from the MFA Photography, Video and Related Media Department.

Katora Okada’s photographs document the nomadic inhabitants of the Sahara desert. According to the artist, “My combination of close-up portraiture and expansive landscapes is intended to show the duality between individuality and nature’s harsh indifference.” Okada is a current student in the BFA Photography Department.
