"New American Abstraction 1960 – 1975" Exhibition
Gary Snyder Project Space
This event has ended.
Gary Snyder/Project Space presents “New American Abstraction 1960 – 1975”. The title pays homage to the large three volume book “The New American Abstraction 1950 – 1970”, by the French author, Claudine Humblet, which has recently been translated into English.
Humblet borrowed the title from the 1963 exhibition at the Jewish Museum, “Toward a New Abstraction”, organized by Ben Heller. Humblet, in the introduction to her book, writes:
“New Abstraction should be understood not as a movement … but a kind of convergence over a period of time of structural approaches that attract each other rather than form a precise group… Structures triumph … Color is structure…”
There is a sense that in the embrace of Pop Art as the dominant response to Abstract Expressionism, a wide range of abstract responses have not received proper attention – including Color Field Painting, Op Art, Systemic Painting, Hard Edge Painting, and more. This exhibition is a small contribution to this new look at New American Abstraction.
