Calling to mind influences as art historically diverse as Kazimir Malevich and Mark Rothko, Kazimira Rachfal's paintings subvert such painters as Rothko's monumentality with an intimate scale. Her paintings are quiet, unassuming, and slowly unfolding. The touch in Rachfal's work is just as crucial to her pictorial language as her sense of light and distinctly muted palette. Because of their small format, the viewer is more closely engaged with their intricate surfaces.
