Photographs by Andrew Eccles capture the beauty and joyful exuberance of the dancers in the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.
Eccles has spent more than 10 years photographing the Ailey Company, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, and a collection of his work has just been published in Ailey Ascending: A Portrait in Motion by Chronicle Books. The photographs in the exhibition have been selected from the book.
Eccles has been photographing dancers for many years. “When I was a kid in Canada, my sister was a dancer, so I was exposed to it very early and have always liked it,” he said. He found that “Shooting dance was a wonderful first job because dancers are extremely collaborative and not very judgmental. They’ll work with you and do things again and again for you.”
Eccles has been a professional photographer in New York since 1987 shooting dancers, celebrities, models, athletes and musicians for countless editorial and advertising clients. His images have appeared on hundreds of magazine covers worldwide, including one of his award-winning photographs of actor Steve Martin that appeared on the cover of "100 Years of Photography" published by The New York Times.
