Contemporary works of art are acts of imagination that express the modern world and simultaneously transmit the values of the past. They help to shape our understanding of time because our perceptions of the past are defined, in part, by what is beautiful and by what types of things have value. We have a stronger sense of the present precisely because we are exposed to art that has been passed from generation to generation. And even though we discuss time as if it were a linear flow, our whole experience of art fights against this notion. We view antiquities with thoroughly modern eyes, even as we project our heritage onto every new work of art we examine. Artists understand this interplay of history and novelty, and they exploit the fluidity of time with every new creative act.
