"Olu Oguibe: Women of Substance" Artist Talk

Jamaica Center for Arts & Learning

This event has ended.

Women of Substance is a personal canon celebrating remarkable women who have given character and vision to the 20th century. These women, who come from all over the world and are famous for a wide variety of accomplishments, range from Aretha Franklin and Billie Holiday to Winne Mandela, Ana Teresikowa, and Chien-Shiung Wu.

Canonization is, of course, a patriarchal preoccupation, and one that has almost always prioritized men over women. Women of Substance is Oguibe’s attempt to counterbalance this and thus re-emphasize woman’s central place in history.

Oguibe began creating Women of Substance in 2000, when he was an artist in residence at the World Trade Center as part of the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s residency program. The series of paintings will be shown in New York for the first time at the Jamaica Center for Arts & Learning in celebration of Women’s History Month (March) and International Women’s Day (March 8th).
