This event has ended.

In collaboration with the Godel + Co. Fine Art, we are pleased to preset a special selection of Hudson River School paintings from the 1860s and 1870s, with works by Alfred Thompson Bricher (1837-1908), John William Casilear (1811-1893), Hermann Herzog (1832-1932), Charles W. Knapp (1823-1900), and Nelson Augustus Moore (1824-1902).

As with Kim Keever's more conceptual photographs currently exhibited in our Main Gallery, early Romantic and Hudson River School paintings sought nature for inspiration and as a vehicle by which their emotions could be expressed. Also like Keever, even though their scenes may be based from reality, they are a synthesis of different places and idealized to represent the Arcadian pastoral or the vast untamed wilderness. Such work helped establish and ingrain the myth of the American Landscape and what it represents to our culture, our ideals and our sense of being in the world.
