This event has ended.

The exhibition focuses on 50 works from her book-record “Tout Seul dans la Forêt en Plein Jour,” 2007. These drawings are inspired by war and conflicts of all kinds and examine the dark side of modern life in a way that is undogmatic and even verging on hopeful.

“Tout Seul dans la Forêt en Plein Jour, Avez-Vous Peur?” (All Alone in the Forest in Broad Daylight, Are You Scared?) contains drawings in black, white and shades of gray in which the forest forms a backdrop for a parade of victims of war. Castrée’s drawings have a unique elegance and distinctive authority that convey emotion and are able to navigate topics such as abuse, fear and panic. One series of drawings involves a man who stepped onto a landmine, and another series deals with wounded warriors wandering aimlessly in the forest. Also, Castrée will be exhibiting a series of ink and watercolor “mask” drawings from 2007 in which masks represent identities, social roles and expectations that are somehow arbitrary or interchangable.

Castrée was born in Quebec City, Montreal in 1981, and has been drawing and making comics since the age of fifteen. Self taught, Castrée participated in many fanzines during her teen years and eventually started to have her work published by l'Oie de Cravan, a poetry journal in Montréal. So far, four books have been published "Lait Frappé", "Roulathèque Roulathèque Nicolore", "Pamplemoussi" (which comes with a twelve-inch vinyl), and "Die Fabrik" (which was published in Germany by Reprodukt). Castrée's work has been featured in "Drawn & Quarterly Showcase Three". As in "Pamplemoussi," “Tout Seul dans la Forêt..” features a vinyl record in the book of Castrée's songs - she sings and performs under the name Woelv, and has toured throughout the world. Castrée has contributed to magazines and exhibitions in Canada, the United States, Japan, France, England, Slovenia and Scandinavia. Castrée was included in the exhibition “Telling Tales: Contemporary Women Cartoonists,” curated by Dan Nadel in 2006 at the gallery. She lives and works in Washington State.
