This event has ended.

New York artist Alix Pearlstein is best known for her performance-based videos, in which she explores the psychological, emotional, and social underpinnings of human relationships and group dynamics. Analogous to her earlier works that operate in a realm between the theatrical and the cinematic, this Kitchen-commissioned, four-channel video installation reveals multiple perspectives on a minimally scripted and choreographed confrontation between two sets of opposing actors/characters, staged within the context of the black box theater. Shown through four simultaneous, circling long takes, dramas of passion and intimacy, trust and betrayal, dependency and vulnerability are distilled into fundamental narratives, motives, and actions in real-time. Akin to a kind of modern day parable or abstracted morality play, Pearlstein uses these highly-charged conflicts between characters over issues of access, territory, and dominance as a means to reveal the essential nature of power and competition.
